In mid-January, the Osten-Victor Living with Advanced Illness Centre launched a new program: the Living with Dignity Discussion Group.
The group came to fruition when Elizabeth Myers, a client of the Osten-Victor Living with Advanced Illness Centre, collaborated with her counsellor to create a space that she herself was looking for (learn about Elizabeth’s story here).
Building on the legacy of Hospice Calgary’s highly respected Living with Cancer program that was offered pre-pandemic, the Living with Dignity Discussion Group is held weekly over zoom for individuals living with advanced illness. It provides an opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences and to engage in open, honest conversations about end-of-life issues in a supportive environment.
“Following the lead of our clients and being genuinely client-centred is one of our highest values at Hospice Calgary. I am grateful to have been able to put this value into practice,” says Jaclynn, Program Manager for the Osten-Victor Living with Advanced Illness Centre.
The group has already gathered several times, and when asked what has inspired her most, Jaclynn shared: “The connections between group participants. Moments when one group member is speaking, and the others are nodding, smiling, and sometimes even laughing as they recognize themselves in that shared experience.”
Our vision is that this group will foster a supportive community for people living with advanced illness—one that honours the wisdom, experiences, and voices of everyone who joins.
